History of the Pisa Half Marathon
From a small, local race to a big event, the Pisa Half Marathon is today one of the most beloved and participated among the FIDAL half marathons.
Everything started in 2001, when a patient that had recently been through a transplantation surgery decided to participate a non competitive race that had place in Pisa on the 25th of April. He run 15 kilometers!
The staff of the Transplantation Center of Pisa, one of the most active in Italy and internationally recognized, was so impressed that the patient had recovered so well both phisically and socially that they decided to take advantage of this kind of events to promote the value of organ donation.
The following year, a non competitive race was born expecially with this goal. The event became immediately very popular, and in 2007 this event became the Pisa Half Marathon. That's why, today, there still is a very important non competitive event alongside the competition.
